Bowel Cancer Screening

Behind lung cancer, bowel cancer is the biggest cancer killer in Australia. Every year, more than 15,000 Australians are told they have bowel cancer which equates to 286 new diagnoses each week.

While this may seem alarming, bowel cancer is one of the curable cancers and if detected early, patients can make a full recovery. This is why we encourage both men and women over the age of 50 to undertake a bowel screening every one to two years. Screening kits can be purchased from our AFS Friendly Pharmacy for $39.95.

The test is very simply to do and can be done in the comfort of your own home. Of course, we are always here to help and if you have any questions please have a chat to one of our friendly pharmacists and they will be more than happy to assist.

what are the signs + symptoms?

Bowel cancer can develop with few or no warning signs hence why the screening is so important for everyone. However, if symptoms do appear these may include:

Blood in or on the stool

Recent + persistent change in bowel habit

General stomach discomfort

Frequent gas or pains

Unexplained weight loss

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, we reccomend that you consult your GP as soon as possible.
